Rolls-Royce plans to foray into flying taxi market
It could carry four to five people at speeds of up to 250 miles per hour. | Photo Credit: Kai Pfaffenbach
It has designed a propulsion system and is looking for partners
British jet engine maker Rolls-Royce has designed a propulsion system for a flying taxi and is in search for partners to help develop a project it hopes could take to the skies as soon as early next decade.
Rolls-Royce said on Sunday it has drawn up plans for an electric vertical take-off and landing (EVTOL) vehicle, or flying taxi, which could carry four to five people at speeds of up to 250 miles per hour for approximately 500 miles.
The company, which makes engines for planes, helicopters and ships, joins a variety of companies racing to develop flying taxis, which could revolutionise the way people travel.
For long the stuff of science fiction and futuristic cartoons such as The Jetsons, aviation and technology leaders are working to make electric-powered flying taxis a reality, including Airbus, U.S. ride- sharing firm Uber and a range of start-ups including one backed by Google co-founder Larry Page, called Kitty Hawk. Rolls-Royce’s design will be showcased in digital form at the Farnborough Airshow, which starts on Monday. The company is looking for an airframer and a partner to provide aspects of the electrical system to help commercialise the project.
The firm said in a statement that it was well-placed to play a leading role in the “personal air mobility” market. “The concept vehicle uses gas turbine technology to generate electricity to power six electric propulsors designed to have a low noise profile,” the company said, adding the design used its existing M250 gas turbine.

Please respond to this by coming up with at least one other example of inventions inspired by scifi. Due date for posting is 20.7.2018 (Friday) before my two hour class with you on that day.

Good evening Ma'am.....
ReplyDeleteThis is Srimathi Dharshana.
Things like Hoverboard ( I first saw them in Spy kids ), is an invention inspired by futuristic friction......
now I think they have invented a new hover board wth some advanced features.......
Google assistant and Siri i.e. voice activation.
Finger print sensors...... One of the recent invention......
And fully self driving cars which is to gonna hit the markets shortly is also inspired by scific..... When I saw i-robot for the first time I was a kid.... I got super excited.... I wished tat I could have one 😅....... But my parents got only toy car for me 😂😂....
The above is based on my perspective......
This is to link for some invention inspired by scifi ....

Thank you
Good night
Forgive me for my typos......
DeleteInteresting Shrimathi. Thank you for sharing your list.
DeleteHello all. This is Ameresh.
ReplyDelete21st century is the only period which came across extraordinary number of new inventions for the betterment of humankind. Technological development and innovative thinking paved way for these new inventions. Flying drone is one of the best example of new invention.
Another important invention which has the most audience is hyper looping. Hyper looping is still a dream for people in developing countries like india. Movies like cannon, light cycle, speeder bike were themost inspirational sci-fi movie for hyperlooping. Countries like Saudi Arabia, USA and Canada are on their way for the inauguration of hyper loop train which could move at a maximum speed of 800 mph. This new way of transportation has already got attention from people all around the world. It has been estimated that hyper looping transport will reduce the travelling time by more than 50%.
Thank you Ameresh. Good info.
DeleteHi mam..I'm Kanimozhi ..This generation is making everything possible that whatever we see in films they are based on director's imagination and the other industry regarding to that is trying to make it true as possible..For example, our Tamil film "Enthiran" I.e the Robot, in this Shankar came up to screen the new idea of emotional robot ...But now they are making it real in which the robot will be aware of emotions. These robots are in progress by EMOSHAPE industry. It has completed its first production of Emotional processing Unit which creates emotions in machines. An EPI I I industry is making the emotional chip that enables emotional response in AI,Robots and consumer electronics devices.EMOSHAPE predicts that before the end of this century humans will talk more to sentient machines than to other humans. The use of emotion remains a fundamental need for humans, one that cannot be addressed by today’s emotion technology. So science fiction is helpful for creating new inventions ...Hence proved by these articles...
ReplyDeleteTrue Kanimozhi. Thank you. Also thanks for sharing the video clip on hyperloop in the group.

ReplyDeleteAtomic bombs was an invention which was inspired by science fiction. 32years earlier H. G. WELLS novel's the world set free'. In that novel it is mentioned as new bomb would continued to explore indefinitely. This inspired Rutherford and Frederick shoddy and William ramsay to invent atomic bombs. Some more examples for science fiction are mobile phones, video calls. They are also discovered on the inspiration of science fiction.
Interesting Aravindh.
DeleteHello ... I'm Faizal Usama... Wow that's cool. Nothing is impossible in this modern techno world. Once flying was only a dream as people dreamt of flying like a bird, now people fly from one place to another easily with the help of aeroplane. One such example is Quantum Computers. The race is on to build the world’s first meaningful quantum computer—one that can deliver the technology’s long-promised ability to help scientists do things like develop miraculous new materials, encrypt data with near-perfect security and accurately predict how Earth’s climate will change. Such a machine is likely more than a decade away, but IBM, Microsoft, Google, Intel and other tech heavyweights. A common metaphor used to compare the two is a coin. In conventional computer processor a transistor is either up or down, heads or tails. But if I ask you whether that coin is heads or tails while it’s spinning, you might say the answer is both. That’s what a quantum computer builds on. Instead a conventional bit that’s either 0 or 1, you have a quantum bit that simultaneously represents 0 and 1, until that qubit stops spinning and comes to a resting state.
ReplyDeleteQuantum Computers are extremely faster than conventional computers. We can expect Quantum computers in the next few years.
Thank you Faisal.

ReplyDeleteScience fiction has paved way to many inventions one of which is a 3D printer. You could have noted the 3D printer in many spy movies like Mission Impossible and also the famous Jurassic park movie. Though the idea for 3d printers was given in 1983 by Chuck Hull, the 21st century showed the development of these printers. These are now used for making minute products in size of micrometer and also complicated designs are made easily with these printers. Though the 3D printer is not into everyday use, steps are taken for bringing it to the masses.
Very good info As win. In fact our own university is supporting a start-up which is working with 3d printing. The office is found in cpde building.
DeleteHi all this is Yuvaraj. P
ReplyDeleteThere a many engineering discoveries and scientific discoveries developed in the 20 the century but the thing artifical intelligence is inspired me more ..
Scientist worked for more than 20 years to develop a AI robot and the first country to develop the robot is the super power nation.
The main problem in developing an AI robot is the language skills because the scientist cannot crack how the babies on growing can speak in his mother tongue without any grammatical error.
During the development of AI robot many sci fi movies are released in Western nd eastern countries like I robot, robot, terminator, matrix etc
few years back a new AI robot is developed name it is name is
Sophia and it is a social humanoid robot developed by Hong Kong-based company Hanson Robotics. Sophia was activated on April 19, 2015
After the arrival of this robot the the tech giants like Amazon, Google developed
Some inventions like Amazon echo, Google home and Google assistant also enabled with AI features which responds when u are not available to pick the call.
This is feature is not available in India may be come on upcoming month .
Thank u..
Hi Yuvaraj. Yes. You are absolutely right. AI is the field that is fast developing these days.
DeleteHi mam! I am Pranav Sankar from Food Tech . Science Fiction leads to Many important Inventions which are useful today. In Mary Shelley's 1818 book , Scientist Victor Frankenstein uses dead body parts to build a man , bringing him to life with Powerful electric current .While such an extreme feat has yet to be achieved ! After almost 140 years Dr. Richard .H. Lawler achieved first successful kidney transplant ! In 1967 Dr.Christian Bernard achieved first human heart transplant !
ReplyDeleteHer idea of using electricity to animate a body could be seen as a foreshadowing of the defibrillator . Such innovations have proved to be Vital in saving thousands of lives today !
Excellent information Pranav. Thank you for calling attention to the fact that sci-fi givrg ideas which are used in smaller scale at the experimental stage.
DeleteThis is sowmya. One such invention like Robert H. Goddard, the American scientist who built the first liquid-fueled rocket—which he successfully launched on March 16, 1926—became fascinated with spaceflight after reading an 1898 newspaper serialization of H.G. Wells’ classic novel about a Martian invasion, War of the Worlds. As Goddard would recall later, the concept of interplanetary flight “gripped my imagination tremendously.”
ReplyDeleteThank you. Sowmya. This is information I am coming across for the 1st time.
DeleteHi mam, this is Saranraj from ceramic technology. In the modern world it is possible to invent the thing that is shown by sci-fi . The character Tom Swift made use of a stun gun in the series. When Jack Clover, a NASA physicist invented the Taser, he named it so because of his love for the series . This all shows that lot of inventions made out from the fictions
ReplyDeleteVery interesting. Thank you for sharing that Saranraj.
DeleteHi mam , I am karthika from food tech.Today so much of inventions in the world based on science fiction. One of the them is autonomous vehicles(ie. self driving cars). One of the movie related to this are "irobot"and "Total recall" presented the ideas of driverless vehicles. They envisioned a world with no car accidents, where no one had to waste their time actually driving during their commute. Cars or trucks in which human drivers are never required to take control to safely operate the vehicle. It have combine sensors and software to control ,navigate and drive the vehicle. Various self driving technologies have been developed by Google, uber, nissan, Tesla and other automakers. In India these vehicles won't be available but in california, there are driverless cars on road today. It could be sale for next several years.
ReplyDeleteYes very true Karthika. In fact Tesla, Google etc have been working very hard on this project.
DeleteHiI ma'am. This is Jayasiva from Food Tech. Now we are in 21st century....everything is possible nowadays bcoz of our technological developments. One of the examples of invention inspired by science fiction is invisible garment....It works on the principle as same as everyone saw invisible cloak in Harrypotter. We see objects bcoz light reflects off them and hit our eyes...Here invisible garment involves bending of light that hits our eyes around an object so we can see what's behind that object but not the object itself(ie.,A typical human eye will respond to wavelength from 390 to 700 nm that is a visible region...It measures only 80 nm so it is invisible to our eyes).Scientists and millitary have attempted to implement the invisibility technology.
ReplyDeleteWow Jayasiva. Nice interesting info. This is the 1st time I am reading about this. I remember seeing a whatsapp video on this. But it didn't give any explanation for this.
DeleteHi mam...I'm Arjun from food technology ...nowadays artificial intelligence is very famous in that I like voice control of gadgets cars etc ..this technology is very famous from iron Man movies but now it's in real life too and everyday we are using it .. In smart phones also v have voice commanding ; Siri in apple phone; Google home; luxury cars like Bentley also can be activated by voice control this is a famous example from the movie 2012.
ReplyDeleteThank you

DeleteHi mam, this is Jayaroopinni, apparel technology. One problem that many people face while purchasing an apparel in online is the fit problem. So some of the apps have developed a software, that takes our basic mandatory measurements as an input to generate a model. The dress we select can be worn virtually over it to check on the fit and look on us. Scientists are working on this technology known as 'VR models'. This uses 3D capturing and some motion capture technology to generate a 3D models in the garment outlets and malls , so that people wouldn't wait in queues in front of dressing rooms . But still sensing the feel of garment when worn cannot be achieved
ReplyDeleteWow, Jayaroopini. When is this technology coming to India? I would be very happy to use it.
DeleteAlready apps like ajio are already using a basic version of this technology. This technology is expected in shops in 2 years, but no talks about this technology in India
DeleteHii mam..I'm Gayathri.S from Food tech.. Nowadays inventions inspired by science fiction are increasing due to technology development..For example..In William Gibson's novels... When devices known as 'microsofts' are small chips installed behind the user's ear..it gives them certain knowledge or skills such as the ability to speak another language as long as they are plugged in...
ReplyDeleteAs of now, Microsoft is developing its own translation technology, for incorporation into many of their software products and services. Most notably this includes real time translation of video calls with Skype Translator.
As of October 2015, Microsoft Translator supports over 50 languages and can translate video calls between English, French, German, Chinese, Italian, and Spanish.
In February 2010, a communications software called VoxOx launched a two-way translator service for instant messaging, SMS, email and social media titled the VoxOx Universal Translator. It enables two people to communicate instantly with each other while both typing in their native languages which is very interesting and comfortable one.
Thank you..
Thank you Gayathri. My only doubt is how effective can these translators be. Often machine translators do literal translation, but do not get the figurative or symbolic meaning of words and sentences. There is a famous example of a machine translator translating the phrase "out of sight, out of mind" as " invisible idiot".
DeleteHii mam.Myself indhu from food tech.In this 21st century , nothing is impossible.scientist invent things more interesting day by day.Among many invention, some of them may grabbed our attention in that one of which is atom bomb& nuclear bomb. The defamatory result of this invention has been well known through history.on Aug 6,1945 USA dropped bomb on hiroshima- Japan.Innovtion& invention are always welcomed and appreciated at all ages of life. But the only limitation is applicable with the application of such inventions in accordance with their probs & pros.
ReplyDeleteVery true indhu. Technology should be used to solve problems, not to create more problems. This is a major idea explored in dystopian sci-fi.
DeleteHi This is SURAJ
ReplyDeleteFrom Iron Man to future dystopia, powered armour for soldiers has always been a staple in sci-fi. The US military is among those with an eye on the idea. TALOS - that's a Tactical Assault Light Operator Suit - has often been described as an "Iron Man suit", but is far less exotic than the superhero's attire. The fictional Iron Man suit can fly, is nearly indestructible and fires concussive energy weapons, Instead, the US Army hoped to create a "smart" bodysuit, which monitors soldiers' vital signs, with a powered exoskeleton to increase strength. The project is rumoured to use liquid armour which solidifies when hit by bullets but very little is known about its progress.
Also another invention inspired by iron man is associated with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg's personal project for 2016 has been to build an artificially intelligent, voice-controlled assistant for his home. Now that he's finished the first version of his own Iron Man-inspired Jarvis, he's considering giving away the code he created.
In a lengthy Facebook post, Zuckerberg describes how he went about creating his digital butler for his home in San Francisco. He spent a total of 100 hours building the assistant, which can control his lights, music, and even make toast with a retrofitted toaster from the 1950s.
Sci-Fi is really good which makes people to do things are impossible!!!! I hope this and all other inventions inspired by Sci-Fi should reach common peoples very soon.

DeleteHi mam.. this is Aswin Kumar from ceramic...
ReplyDeleteOften, the idea for inventions may come from a need of some sort,. But other times, the idea may come from a source – the imagination. The idea of science fiction falls under this imaginary field. Some just take this as entertainment.. but for inventors it could be their inspiration..
After attending the 1964 Worlds Fair, the great science fiction writer"Isaac Asimov penned an article for the New York Times" imagining what inventions would be on display at the World’s Fair in fifty years.
In his essay, he hypothesized “robot-brain” cars, capable of self-driving. Fifty some years later in 2017, Asimov’s prediction is eerily on point.
Major global companies such as Google, Uber, Lyft, Tesla, and Apple are all working towards becoming the first to sell self-driving vehicles to the public.
Excellent info. Aswin. Thank you.
DeleteGood evening ma'am. This is Abirami from Apparel. Today wireless network is the basic need of every human being in the world. One of the first visions of wireless communicators called bluetooth were small enough to be worn by the users. It all came from the original “Star Trek” series. The communications officer Lieutenant Uhura, wore a device in her ear that allowed her to monitor communications throughout space. In “Star Trek: The Next Generation” all the officers wore a device called a ‘communicator’ on their uniforms. These devices allowed crew members to communicate with each other, even from great distances.
ReplyDeleteToday, we are all familiar with bluetooth devices, which allow for the hands free operation of our cell phones. We wear bluetooth devices in our ears, remarkably similar to the one Uhura wore.
Thus science fiction has led to many ideas in which technology has taken it's role to vision in a successful way.
Good info Abirami. Thank you.
DeleteHi mam this is Ramya barathi from Food tech. Inventions inspired by science fiction are getting increased everyday . eg:A tool in the “Star Trek” ‘sick bay’(an old English series) was the hypospray. This device delivered medicine through the skin without the need for injection. It could be programmed to deliver any medication as needed. Scientists at MIT have developed a 'needleless injection' system that is effectively the same as hypospray. The device will deliver liquid medications at extremely high pressures, allowing them to penetrate the skin without being injected.
ReplyDeleteIn the same series all medical officers carried around devices called Tricorders. The device was hovered around the patient, and it collected medical data from the patient, processed it through a medical database, and delivered a diagnosis. The medical world has been fascinated with tricorders since their inception, so much , so that a company called Qualcomm organized a competition to create the first real life tricorder.Devices entered into the competition must be able to read a patient’s vital signs, provide basic blood tests, and contain a diagnostic database. The competition justannounced its winner on April 12th 2012, and the winners are doing further testing of their prototypes.
Excellent information Ramya. Very interesting. Thank you.

Hi Ma'am! This is Quanitha Sadaf from Apparel. Cellphones, one of the greatest inventions of technology is also inspired from science fiction. Martin Cooper, the inventor of the first mobile phone, got his inspiration from an episode of “Star Trek: the Original Series” where Captain Kirk used his communicator to call for help. In “Star Trek: The Original Series,” all the crew members all carried handheld devices, that looked remarkably like flip phones, that allowed them to communicate while on the ship and even from planet to planet. When the show came out and all phones were wired to the wall, the idea of a handheld device capable of communication across town, seemed like fantasy, but in 1983, less than twenty years after “Star Trek” aired, the cell phone was a reality.
ReplyDeleteTrue Quanitha. I remember the star trek series very well. I grew up watching it.
DeleteHello ma'am...myself Ramya from food tech
ReplyDeleteThis is really amazing... sci fi movies or novels never fails to entertain us...at the same time inventions inspired by sci fi also never fails to astonish us...
One such familiar example is Smart watches!
Its first appearance was in "Dick Tracy" comic strips in 1940's...The super detective had a watch that he could speak in to and it also gave info on fly...
Since then, these kind of smart watches appeared on wrist of many heros like James Bond, Men in Black, Agent K, Inspector gadget etc...
Today...there are many companies all over world which manufacture smart watches..
Apple watches allow users to attend phone calls, look at texts and browse all from their wrists
Devices like Garmin Fenix combines smart watches with fitness wearable, used to track physical activities...to check for calories burnt...also to check texts and notifications.
Interesting Ramya
DeleteThank you.
Hlo all!! Ma’am... me Joshitha from Apparel technology... Flying taxi is really an exciting invention...Sci Fi works super cool here... 😀😃 When dhirudharashtran couldn’t view the kurushethra war...sanjayan projected the war field to him through his eyes...Mahabaratha gave us this story ages ago... Now we could watch a scene without being actually present in that place... Science has made this possible through fiction ideas...😉 Video calling is one of the finest inventions I think... the world has become so small with these inventions... Google duo, imo, FaceTime, skype, tango, line are a few video calling apps that help to shrink this whole world... One big advantage of these advancements is that these apps are easily accessible... I’m not sure if the above example inspired the invention of video calling but I just felt some link😅😅
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely right Joshitha. Not all inventions need to be thought of only by sci-fi writers. Often other types of fantasy fiction and myths also inspire inventions.
DeleteHi mam, this is Riyaz .
ReplyDeleteI just googled for inventions inspired by sci-fi and got many examples that i haven't heard of. And here is a tamil poetry reference #ஔவையாà®°்
She, while praising திà®°ுக்குறள்,
'anuvai thulaithezh kadalai pugatti
Kuruga tharitha kural' said these words.
She mentions that atom can be divided into parts.
Which is made true by nuclear fission reactors.
This shows that anything can be made for real.
Who knows all inventions in #BlackMirror will be for real one day.
Extremely interesting Riyaz. Wonderful connection to Tamil poetry. As Joshitha pointed out earlier other writers have also thought of or imagined such technological possibilities.

DeleteHello ma'am .. I am P S Bhavani from food tech.
ReplyDeleteNowadays, technology is devoted to many creative and scientific inventions. One among them is "Ear bud headphones".
In Bradbury's most famous novel , Fahrenheit 451, he presented a dystopian world where books are outlawed and destroyed by " fireman" in the society.
Bradbury also presents a world where people are zonked out and distracted by technology from flat screen TVs to Seashell radio, which he describes as "an electronic ocean of sound, of music and talk coming in on the shore of unsleeping mind".
Bradbury also describes how the Seashell radio device is tucked cozily inside the ear. It's clear he was on to something here, as nearly every person at the gym ,on the bus, or jogging on the street sports a pair of Earbud headphones.
Thus the science fiction encourages us to explore.. all the futures, good and bad, that the human mind can envision.
Absolutely rightBhavani. Ray Bradbury was a very insightful writer.
DeleteHi ma'am.. ..this is veeramani from food tech...one of the inventions that I inspired to share here is helicopters...
ReplyDeleteIgor sikorsky, the inventor of the helicopter was inspired by the Jules verne book "Robur the conqueror" in which the main character builds an aircraft out of pressboard and flies using rotors. But at that time, early prototypes for helicopters already existed, Verne took those prototypes further, imagining the ways they would develop.
Also a cartoon movie known as "The leap " in that movie too the leading role builds a feather using wood ...which can make him fly to particular height and distance .
Interesting Veeramani. Sci-fi doesn't only imagine completely new things. Sometimes it also builds on existing things and just accelerate research in that particular area.
DeleteHello mam.I am Vishal Raswanth from apparel technology.our inventors may be got more inspiration from James bond series and bringing those gadgets into the real world,I think so, like GPS trackers, bug detectors, car that can run both on land and under water, virtual reality training centres(now it is used for gaming),guns that automatically select the target and firing it, hidden cameras(spy camera), prosthetic working like normal hand, remote controling cars, manless helicopters that can be controlled through remote, touch display, industrial laser to cut hard steel, touch display watches and these are the things I can get this moment may be many more gadgets out there that are inspired from this series.
ReplyDeleteI agree Vishal. Although I wouldn't call James Bond stories as sci Fi, it's true that the inventions shown in them are very inspiring.
DeleteHi I'm Nishalini from Food Technology. Nowadays technology development proves that nothing is impossible in this world. Robots ammed to complete chores are no strangers to science fiction — partly because people have fantasized about someone else doing their housework for centuries. Luckily, house cleaning robots are no longer exclusive to The Jetsons. Even though the robots cleaning your home might not have as much personality, they’re definitely effective. Massachusetts-based company iRobot delivered its line of vacuum cleaners to curious consumers in 2002. Their devices minimize the effort needed to clean, and scheduling systems integrated into many robotic cleaners create peace of mind. Unless your have a cleaning emergency, you won’t need to tell the machines what to do and when to do it. And as far as products like the Roomba go, very little maintenance is involved. Typically, consumers only need to empty the vacuum’s dustbin when it’s full.iRobot has also released robotic gutter cleaners, mops, and pool cleaners. Of course, robots in science fiction have had other jobs as well. In Terminator robots serve as soldiers. In Robot and Frank, robots help to care for the elderly.
ReplyDeleteThank you..!
Interesting Nishalini. Robotics is a fast developing field. Am waiting for the day when the housecleaning robot will come to India.
DeleteHi Mam I'm Supraja R from Food Technology, Nowadays technologies are developing rapidly and scientists are also proving everything is possible.Dr Sai Siva Gorthi, from the department of Instrumental and Applied Physics and her team did so. They converted a smartphone into a powerful microscopic device that eliminates the various stages of blood testing to detect malaria. The team replaced the phone camera with high resolution optics of a microscope. The smartphone also has software that studies the images captured through the microscope and tells even a layman whether it has the malaria virus or not. It requires a tiny amount of blood as a sample.I hope this invention should reach the common people very soon.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
Interesting Supraja. Which university does Dr. Gorthi belong to? Is it our university?
DeleteMam, He is from IISc(Indian Institute of Science), Bangalore.
DeleteHii mam.. This is Janani from food tech.. Technology has been developed tremendously from early man life to present world. The development of technology has both positive and negative side.Because of the invention of computer, humans were replaced by them. After some years, robots will be doing all the work. The world will be in tha hands of robots soon. The world wars had killed millions of lives. This happened because of the use of nuclear bomb. It has helped to develop more advanced economies ( including today's global economy). The technology processes produce unwanted by products which is called as pollution. Because of the release of increased level of CFC, there is a hole in the ozone layer. Even though the world is nothing without technology, the technology has enormous side effects. The invention which inspires me is the car that runs on water. Now, the price level of petrol and diesel are tremendously increasing where the middle class and poor people can't afford to pay that much price. There is also a scarcity of petrol and diesel. The car which runs on water was invented by Purshottam Papaliya. This car hasn't entered into market yet. In this car, energy is created by hydrogen and oxygen and a small water tank is fitted with the engine of the car. I conclude by saying that technology should be developed without harming humans and environment
ReplyDeleteExcellent information Janani. Who is this Papaliya? Is he from some Indian University or Institute like IIT?
DeleteMam ,This is S.Arun Iyappan from ceramic. According to my point of view, There are some possibilities of inventing these type of things because now a days science and technology leads to drastic development within short span (for example the invention of Nano satellite) It's really a amazing thing , If it is possible to invent like these type of taxies and it Plays a major role in the market with other taxied such as ola, uber, etc. Then peoples suppose to use these type of taxied to reach their destination without any traffic.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely right Arun. I hope I get to use this technology within my lifetime.
DeleteHi mam. This is Harsih.T from Ceramic. The Laser watch
ReplyDeleteIn three iconic James Bond films – "Never Say Never Again", "Goldeneye" and "Die Another Day" – a laser wristwatch that could incinerate items from meters away was one of the superspy's must-have gadgets.
"Never Say Never Again" in 1983 featured a balloon-zapping Rolex, but it took until November 2014 for somebody to create and advertise such a gizmo online.
The inventor's name: Priebe. Patrick Priebe.
A German inventor, who is fascinated by laser technology and comic book-inspired gadgets, Priebe has also successfully designed his own version of Iron Man's gauntlet and lasers and Spider-Man's web-shooter. The above can taken as a small evidence any frictional imagination can be brought to reality using science.
Thank you mam
Very interesting Harish. Although like I said earlier, strictly speaking, I wouldn't call James Bond stories as Sci Fi.
DeleteHi mam, I am Govindaraj from ceramic technology, In the modern world it is possible like flying taxi. Today so much of inventions in the world based on the science fiction, American inventor Simon Lake had been captivated by the idea of undersea travel and exploration ever since he read Jules Verne's Twenty thousand leagues under the sea in 1870 and his company built the first submarine to operate successfully in the open ocean in 1898.
ReplyDeleteGood information Govind. Thank you.

ReplyDeleteHappy day !!! This is Kavitha,
ReplyDeleteThings that were just imaginations in the past have come into existence in the near future. This is one of the major growth of the 20th century. It is evident from the article you have shared ma'am.
Movies like “iRobot” and “Total Recall” presented the idea of driverless vehicles. They envisioned a world with no car accidents, where no one had to waste their time actually driving during their commute. Until just recently, this vision of technology still seemed like science fiction. Google is actually testing driverless vehicles right now.
In California, there are driverless cars on the road today.
Hope the flying taxis wil soon combine with driverless cars in upcoming centuries.
Thank you :)
Yes Kavitha. Such things are fast becoming believable reality.
DeleteHi ma'am.... this is jayasri from food tech... This idea of flying vehicle by Rolls Royce is very interesting.... The innovations of scifi are stunning and inspiring, as we are new buds of science fiction.... The idea of innovation arises in case of particular situations, i.e., while finding solutions to problems... For example, Émile Gagnan and Jacques-Yves Cousteau wanted to breathe underwater, so they invented the first scuba set as a solution.
ReplyDeleteThe invention of a submarine called Argonaut, powered by electricity, containing a grand ballroom and a organ by Jules verne,"the father of science fiction", is a new inspirational thought.
Also in 1920, Karel Capek and developments with Google's deep mind, innovated a robot which had a better understanding of betrayal...Robots were first used as free, slave labor. But now-a-days, they gain sentence and rise up, fighting back against their human creators. I guess, we humans have a lesser understanding of betrayal than robots... This is the advancement of technology, but when something goes wrong "the creations turn against their creators", Therefore, innovations are to be made carefully.....
Yes, that is a very good word of warning. And the info about Cousteau is new to me. I used to watch the documentaries showing Cousteau's underwater adventures and studies. But I never knew that he had contributed to the invention of the scuba equipment. Thanks for the information.
DeleteHappy morning, I am Sristi from food tech.
ReplyDeleteScience fiction is something that has been triggering our thoughts from ages.. something dreamt about before and now it made possible with passion and dedication.. This idea of flying taxi was thought long back..
The author Ian Fleming was a fan of flying cars, writing his novel Chitty Chitty Bang Bang around the concept in 1963. He also included a flying car in his James Bond novel (1964) and subsequent film, The Man with The Golden Gun. These concepts are based on a car with wheels that can drive on the road but is also capable of flying when required.
Sci fic is just imagination.. but surely humans have a vogue to capture their mind and turn it to reality.
We see such similarity in movies like star wars.. and also our one of the favourite kid series of power rangers..
Not only vertical leading taxi but now science is also focusing on horizontal moving vehicle through glass tunnel that move at the speed of sound.. by the principle of air propogation..Therefore Sci fic is the stepping stone to what next can happen decade later in our future and the want for such changes neither stops nor gets satisfied.
Interesting srishti. And yes transportation I suppose has the maximum serious research in realising the imaginative devices of sci-fi.
DeleteHi ma'am. This is yamini from food technology. Science fiction had been a pioneer for many inventions. Ramayana is an ancient epic poem in Indian history . The pushpaka vimana used by Ravan was a concrete idea which was described in Ramayana years ago. It was visualized in reality in the form of the flying vehicle called flight invented by Wright brothers. Till now there is no flying vehicle for a individual person which I used to admire. I guess soon this flying taxi would turn into flying bikes :D
ReplyDeleteYes Yamini. Others in the class have also pointed out that our ancient epics did serve as inspiration for many scifi ideas. Thank you.
DeleteHi am I am Santhosh Kumar fro. Ceramic Technology...Rocket is also an invention inspired by Science fiction..In H.G.WELLS The War of World He has mentioned about Martian invention to earth..This would have paved way to invention of Rocket...HOLOGRAM which was shown in THALA AJITH FILM VIVEGAM which also inspired and paved way to invention by science fiction...
ReplyDeleteHi Santhosh. Nice to link up scifi invention to Thala padam.
DeleteHello Mam...there is an idea of flying train amoung the scientist which is just an idea till now..it could hit the market if it comes to existence.
ReplyDeleteWow. That would be nice Mohan. However our people are calling even our present Metro rail as "Parakkum rail." I wonder what they will call a real flying train.
DeleteHi I'm Tamilpriyaa from Food technology.....One of the first appearances of the Smartwatch was in the “Dick Tracy” comic strips in the 1940’s. The Super Detective, had a watch that he could speak in to and that would provide him information on the fly. Since then, Smartwatches have appeared on the wrist of many a futuristic hero including James Bond, “Men in Black’s” Agent K, and Inspector Gadget.
ReplyDeleteToday, the Apple Watch allows users to answer phone calls, look at texts, and browse the Internet all from their wrists. Devices like the Garmin Fenix combine a smartwatch with a fitness wearable, allowing users to track physical activities, and check their texts and notifications.
Thank you.
Very true Tamilpriya. Smart gadgets are the in thing today.

ReplyDeleteI am Harish Kumar from Food tech. Many people in the world are car lovers. In olden days people who drive the car must control the total car As the days passed away human came with the idea of the automatically operated cars which is completely automated. In olden days people would have not thought about the automatic cars but in today's world automated cars are manufactured only by big companys like BMW Mersides Benz Audi Rolles Royce etc... In future automatic cars will be manufactured by many companies which will play an important role
ReplyDeleteYes Harish. If other companies start entering the market, then even automatic cars might become cheap like our present automobiles.
DeleteHii mam...This is johnson. The technology in each and everything in this world has developed tremendously...The 2012 remake of Total Recall was the inspiration behind the Airborne Ultrasound Tactile Display. Being created by researchers at the University of Tokyo, the Tactile Display projects the visual image of a keypad and tactile stimuli on to the palm of your hand. This particular technology is scheduled to be completed very shortly.
ReplyDeleteWith sci fi movies being larger than life and over the top, one would have thought the day would be really far when we attempted their remakes. With each day, the possibilities become all the more endless, giving us a glimpse into the bright and magnetic future ahead.
True Johnson. The possibilities opened up by sci fi are endless and the innovations are becoming real faster and faster. Someday, the minute a scifi writer comes up with an idea, it may become real. IN that case scifi as a genre may no longer be so interesting.
DeleteHai mam. I am premnath from ceramic. universal translators have permeated science fiction for a lot longer than they’ve actually existed in the real world. In 1945, Murray Leinster’s novella First Contact was one of the first stories to boast instant universal translators. Later, Star Trek included its own device. Even Douglas Adams included a universal translator, the babel fish, in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Thank you...
ReplyDeleteHi Prem. Yes translators are up and coming. But till now I don't know if such machine translators are really effective. Unless one actually comes up with AI that will learn language exactly as human beings learn, this will always remain a quesiton mark.
Deletegood morning mam.i am giyato from food technology.many science fictional stories are become the inspiration of many inventions..in that way on 1964 worlds fair, sir issac ashimov wrote a fiction 'robot brain' in new york times about self driving cars...now it becomes real one...like that in tamil literature 'seevaga sindhaamani' author talked about aeroplane travelling.
ReplyDeleteOh, I should check that out. Giyato. Thank you for the information about Seevaga Sindamani.
DeleteGood morning... This is viswanathan from ceramic..
ReplyDeleteOnce upon a time, it is a dream to go to the moon.. But now, it is possible.. This is also a sci-fi invention..
I'm happy to say this today.. Because this is the day which Neil armstrong went to the moon... First Man went to the moon.. 20/7/1969 20:37 UTC
thank you
Great Viswanathan. And good timing. Only my timing is bad. Since I took my time to respond. Sorry about the delay.
DeleteHi mam. I am Rajkumar R from Food Technology.. I like to talk about smartwatches because I got attracted towards it from the spykids movie .. nowadays smartwatches have become very common ..it is used for entertainment and to check our health status ...we can calculate our hearbeat ;steps we walk; calorie can also be calculated ...we can also use it for watsapp; Facebook ;music; movie;video calls etc
ReplyDeleteYes Rajkumar. Smartwatches are fascinating. Thank you. But aren't they expensive?
DeleteHello mam, this is Padmapriya. Inventions are always inspiring the real scientific one or the sci-fi either. Time machine is the one that always inspired me. And i'm also confuse that in which category should they fall in either the former or the later? Inspire of learning physics since my 8th standard, it is quite embarrassing to throw this question. Since physics isn't my cup of tea it would justify me. The science behind time and time travel will definitely attack every individual to know more about this. Since the concept of travelling against time or along time is still obscure I consider this one to be under the sci-fi inventory, that inspired me in recent times.
ReplyDeleteSorry for the errors....its

HI Padmapriya. First of all don't apologise for errors. It is natural to commit errors in any language, especially in a second language or a foreign language. There is nothing to be defensive or apologetic about it.
DeleteRegarding the point about time travel, it s the one idea of scifi that has not yet become a reality, though scientists are beginning to believe that it might be possible.
Hi mam...This is Abinaya from food technology... Today, video calls are just as pervasive as they were in these science fiction universes. Businesses frequently hold major meetings and even conferences through video call applications like Skype. Video calls made their appearance in science fiction very early. The 1927 movie “Metropolis,” which was one of the first movies in the science fiction genre, featured a wall mounted video phone. Since then, video calling has been a ubiquitous feature of science fiction worlds, appearing in “2001: A Space Odyssey,” “Blade Runner,” “Back to The Future II” and many more
ReplyDeleteYes Abinaya. You re right. The video call has become a part and parcel of our lives as well, not only of movies.
DeleteHai mam😊This is Harsni from food technology.... A movie named Chappie(2015), is a dystopian science fiction action crime thriller film, directed by Neill Blomkamp and written by Blomkamp and Terri Tatchell..In the film, the robots were developed for military purposes and robot that mimics a human mind to the point of feeling emotions and having opinions was also developed. Other movies like Flubber, Avengers and so on also has more of science which gives us more idea on science technology..
ReplyDeleteWe know that now a days, a robot with all technological knowledge are developed for research, business related and personal purpose( assistant). Recently there goes a research work on future military robots, to reduce harmful effect..
Thank u
Thank you Harsni. Yes robotics and AI are really making fast strides in the world of technology.
DeleteHi mam... this is Manosai R from food technology... I recently heard news about the company which are making electric car and this inspired me to write about it. Tesla is the company name which is making large production of electric car and popular autonomous car brand also. This car is actually runs by electric power without need of any other fuels. So it reduce the usage of fuels all over the world.
ReplyDeleteIn foreign countries, they have separate bunk to supply electric power in addition to petrol and diesel. Surely it will take long time to achieve something like this in our country. But i believe that our country will achieve that very soon.
Thank you.
I agree with you Manosai. I hope the technology becomes popular in our country soon. You may not know, but our own Anna University used to own a few Reva (electric powered) cars earlier (probably some 10 - 15 years back). Now I don't know what the university has done with these cars.
