How the newspapers reported the broadcast

On Halloween morning, 1938, Orson Welles awoke to find himself the most talked about man in America. The night before, Welles and his Mercury Theatre on the Air had performed a radio adaptation of H.G. Wells’s The War of the Worlds, converting the 40-year-old novel into fake news bulletins describing a Martian invasion of New Jersey. Some listeners mistook those bulletins for the real thing, and their anxious phone calls to police, newspaper offices, and radio stations convinced many journalists that the show had caused nationwide hysteria. By the next morning, the 23-year-old Welles’s face and name were on the front pages of newspapers coast-to-coast, along with headlines about the mass panic his CBS broadcast had allegedly inspired.
Welles barely had time to glance at the papers, leaving him with only a horribly vague sense of what he had done to the country. He’d heard reports of mass stampedes, of suicides, and of angered listeners threatening to shoot him on sight. “If I’d planned to wreck my career,” he told several people at the time, “I couldn’t have gone about it better.” With his livelihood (and possibly even his freedom) on the line, Welles went before dozens of reporters, photographers, and newsreel cameramen at a hastily arranged press conference in the CBS building. Each journalist asked him some variation of the same basic question: Had he intended, or did he at all anticipate, that War of the Worlds would throw its audience into panic?

    1. Please introduce yourself before making your comment. I understand that people are always connected. But if you notice these days it is easier to spread rumours and fake news. In fact the phrase "fake news" itself evolved in the past couple of years. But read my post carefully. It was not deliberate "fake news" but a radio play / drama which caused widespread panic.

    2. This is Riyaz. But now most ppl are aware of radio plays now and also what they do like plays, callers talks, pranks.. they can differentiate it mostly if someone mistakes them, the one who knows about that play can explain them.

    1. Please introduce yourself. I don't understand the word "posters". The pic I posted was not a poster. It was a collage of newspaper headlines. Please read the post fully. The rumour was spread not by or because of a poster but because of a radio play.

  3. I think something like this won't happen today because when people get these kind of news, the first thing they do is cross-check the news in the internet.

    1. Dear Aswin. You are right. But again I would like to call your attention to the phenomenon of fake news. These days with internet and social media, it has become all the more easier to spread rumours. And it is very difficult to cross check whether the news is genuine or false. (I wonder if you remember, there were fake news / rumours of the deaths of celebrities (Jackie Chan), there were plenty of rumours surrounding the former CM's death. )

      Delete
  4. No it won't... Nowadays people won't believe in rumours... Once they get the news they've go for confirming it. And also only a little people will hear radios these days

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Dear Aswin. Please read my replies to the earlier comments. I disagree on that point. But I agree with your point about radio being out of fashion. But radio is only a medium. Today in place of radio we have many other media. So these other media can be used to spread rumours. This is my argument.

  5. I'm yamini from food tech . My view on this question would be this kind of rumours could spread very fastly with today's accessibility to internet service. There would be a big commotion or at least a viral argument before people could really understand what was actually going on. Rumours can reach people faster than the original news. People who interprets on the news they hear are less than the one's who spread the news as soon as they came to know about it .

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Dear Yamini. It is true that internet accessibility has actually made the spreading of rumours much easier. In fact rumours spread faster than true news is also very true. There has a systematic study of this conducted by researchers from Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 2006 - 17. Check out this info. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/03/08/technology/twitter-fake-news-research.html

  6. I'm Faizal. Yes; Though technology had developed, there are a lot of chances for spreading rumors. Almost everybody is connected to internet. If people find something interesting or different they spread (or) share the news, nomatter is it True or Fake. So, people from other end of the world believe the news thinking it is true. Today rumors are everywhere. It has became a trend nowadays.

    1. Dear Faizal. I agree with you. Why do you think that people spread such news? Why has it become a trend these days? Is it because common people, unlike journalists, do not feel burdened by the responsibility of checking the authenticity of the news they receive?

  9. Myself Ameresh. Yes, it is possible. Like others said, spreading rumor is not a difficult task in this contemporary world. Social media is the largest platform for spreading rumors. Even though we have internet networks through smartphones, we never use it to substantiate whether the news is right or not. At the same time we can’t include everyone under this issue. Some people might not take it as an issue since they knew the truth already. But majority of the people believe whatever they hear they see and never has questioning mind. For ex: Most of the people in India simply trust whatever being broadcasted in the name of “maan ki baat” through radio.

Because this rumor was spreaded in 1938, which means no internet and television facilites when compared to todays technology. People have to believe what they hear. But now a days, journalists are also more in number, they telecast the current situations. Also each and every second we are receiving the breaking news through internet.

  18. Hello all. This is Srimathi Dharshana.

We are in the era of smartphones and unlimited internet so ppl share whatever they find.

My stand is news gets shared faster it can be crct or fake. When we pass news from ppl to ppl there will be some modification occuring while it is getting passed and bcoz of those tiny extra addition of spices to actual news a new info starts to spread among ppl. And this may also evolve as a fake news.

And not all cross check before sharing. many first spread the news and then only check whether it's crct or not.

There exist some ppl who just post something and enjoy from its outcomes.
As you said ma'am , there were many fake news after dismissal of our former TN CM Jayalalithaa ma'am. May be some educated ppl will check for the genuineness of the news.
Among the common ppl I think it won't happen. They will blindly believe and start to do something like protest etc. And it will end very badly.

Tat to news like alien invasion OMG I can't believe what an outcome it will have.

Many may not agree with this. Waiting for reply.

It is seen that fake news spreads like wildfire and lasts longer than the actual news. According to a study, the people are blamed for the fast spreading of fake news rather than the bots. The amount of people listening to radio has reduced nowadays thus spreading fake news through such medium maybe difficult but social media remains the main platform for the spreading of fake news. So something like this can hahapp even now also.

  23. Hi mam , I'm Jayaroopinni, apparel. Social media is a powerful weapon nowadays. This kind of radio plays when posted in social media may spready wide far. But , the commotion similar to that in the article may not hapen because people are aware . Rural people may beleive it to an extent if they have access to social media. Considering radio plays alone, the number of people tuning onto radios is considerably less ! So that kind of commotion is not possible nowadays. Medias like television rapidly go through the situation analyse it and so people are informed that its just a play, in such a scenario.

    ReplyDelete

    1. You have made another valid point Jayaroopini. Today's media is not only about content, it also has plenty of metacontent (analysis). Therefore the media not only presents news, it also mediates and tells us how to interpret the news. But in a way this adds to the feeling that the media only treats people as malleable clay who can be moulded in any way the media wants.

A commotion (like in the above article) can happen but no one will face a situation faced by Welles I guess...as people will have no time to concentrate on one news and they’ll be busy sharing the next rumour😅 We should take tbe responsibility to share things that are true and worthy!!

  28. Hello Mam, I'm Karthika from Food Tech. ; After reading this passage , First thing strike on my mind is, Why Fake News / Rumors are Spreading through Social media / Other Communication device's???

B'coz rumours have some wow factor & some interesting factor included than Real News. That's why only fake news/ rumours are Spreads easily to people.
So cross checking the information received is impossible, b'coz rumours have that wow factor, so human mind thing it is real news.

We can't stop fake news/ Rumours easily , but we can avoid that type of information received from people, on that time mind strikes that, this is doubtful information.
So we can stop forwarding that fake news/ rumours if u have doubt at your mind.

It is a bad thing in the current trends using social media for spreading fake news and rumors and it also killed some people's in recent years .Now a days spreading a fake news is very simple but the real thing is our mind will oscillate so it forgot the truth and real facts easily .
But the good news is some social media like scroll ,logical Indian helps to cross check the relevant facts is genuine or not.
In the olden days with out any Internet people only believe in radios for to check that they need scientific articles published in books for reference otherwise they easily believe the rumors .
In short now a days we can come across lots of fake news and rumors so try to search for the real facts behind the news will be a better to choice .

    1. Yes Yuvaraj. That is a very balanced perspective. WE cannot blame the internet for everything. The internet is a medium that has both good and bad aspects. 31. Hi I'm Suraj,
After reading the post about the fake news and listening the radio's original broadcast , My view is that Welles and his Mercury Theater's personnel intentionally spread this fake news to gain point of attraction, since Welles has played already the innovative characters like Julius Caesar etc., he became a people's person so whatever he said with his crew it was blindly believed by the people at that period of time since there was no cross checking of any information whether it is false or true and also the way he played the skit "The World of Wars" by H.G.Wells and using the background music in the broadcast and also the smart way of using the commentators to be in the different parts of the world made the people to believe blindly since they reported that the martians have invaded the great colonizer of that time "The Great Britain" so it was for sure for the people to believe.

And talking about the current period it is not easily possible to spread any fake news which can cause a National Hysteria because of the evolution of current communication technology, If someone wants to do the same thing then he has to be computer hacker and hack all the websites to show the same fake news everywhere where people go for crosschecking.

Also this kind of rumours can be spread by people's person like present day politicians
so we need to be careful while watching or listening this type of news because even if some news is true now-a-days people are not believing it so we should handle every type of news very carefully!

But, nowadays, we have an development in technology, these kind of rumours happens, people doesn't know whether it is right or wrong. We want to search it with our mind and then spread the news.. That's the most imp thing I think so...

  50. Hi mam this is loganathan T from ceramic technology. In my point of view there many chances to create like these type of news and also it is easily spread through social media's. But nowadays peoples are more updated even the person is uneducated. If the person uneducated the known people will explain to them about what is behind these type of news. So it will not create any panic in the modern society.

  51. Hii mam this is sakthivel form ceramic technology. Now a day's this type rumar are published by many more social media's . We are all connected to the social media. So spread easily, without understanding the concept of this news. When it is become a large issue, then only people are investigating the fact of that news. So the people should analyse the news before believing them.

  53. Hi ma'am..I am Ramya from food tech...I would say that there is very high possibility of spreading a fake news now-a-days when compared to those days....and of course it is technology which made it easier...

Fake news can also affect some people psychologically...so these things has to be taken seriously before spreading any news...and i feel that people in our country should start realizing their responsibility and act accordingly..

  56. Hi mam, this is PADMAPRIYA from food tech. I do agree with these kind of happenings occurs even today. We all know that "fake" news has high rate of propagation,it reaches the mob as soon as possible. This may be because of the day-to-day technology that we use. On the other hand these so called hi-technologies play a major role spreading rumors. This is because according to the internet data base it just an information that is receiving,it doesn't bother about the fact, truth behind that piece of information. And more over we the "inexorable" humans don't find time to cross check the information what we see or hear, because of our so called busy schedules.the thing is now a days spreading of rumors take a fraction of seconds as technology is at it's peak.
